Next Meeting

to the Ottawa Chapter of Muskies Canada Incorporated! (MCI)

Originally called the “Ottawa Valley” Chapter, we've been a focal point for muskie anglers from all over the Ottawa/Gatineau region since 1988.   Our membership is comprised of experienced and novice anglers, young and old, ladies and gentlemen … all with a shared passion for the largest game fish in Eastern Ontario.

We meet at 7:00 PM, on the third Tuesday of every month at Branch 632 of the Royal Canadian Legion, 800 Taylor Creek Drive in Orleans. Map  If you’re curious about what the Chapter and the club is all about, non-members are welcome to come by and have a look.  Please contact one of the Chapter Executives before you come out, or introduce yourself at the beginning of the meeting.  (Note: July and August we either do not hold “formal” meetings, OR we get together on the water somewhere in the area to discuss fishing conditions, what baits are working, etc.)
Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been chasing muskies for 30 years, we try to present meetings that have something for everyone with an emphasis on learning something new and having some fun doing it.  We have a range of speakers from some of our own members with various expertise, to guest speakers who talk about tackle, equipment, electronics, boat maintenance, bait makers, biology, research projects and reports from folks who have done trips to exotic muskie waters. At least once a year (normally in the spring) we do a pizza night and tackle swap where some excellent deals can be had – especially for those who are just starting out.  We do our best to keep the club “business” to a minimum and the enjoyment to a maximum.

Activities:  Once a year we host a Chapter Outing consisting of a day of fishing, a banquet (usually at the Legion as well), a raffle table focused on muskie “stuff” and a trophy for the largest muskie caught and released.  (Open only to MCI members and their guests).  The Chapter also gives back to the community through other events such as support to kids fishing days, shoreline cleanup projects, etc.  We also organize a couple of informal Chapter fishing days over the season and our members use the Members Only Forum to find fishing partners if they are solo, or their regular partner can’t make it out.  Public outreach projects also help us support our mandate of education, by providing an opportunity to spread the “gospel” of catch and release fish, safe muskie handling, and how to “Know the Difference” between pike and muskie.

APRIL 17th! Please join us for the April meeting of the Ottawa Chapter of Muskies Canada. Tuesday, April 17th, we will welcome Dave Scott of AIM Marine as our guest speaker. Dave will be speaking about all the things we need to do to "de-winterize" the boat and get it ready for the new season. We'll be doing a raffle during the break and presenting a few Log Program awards to those who couldn't make it to the March Meeting. We will also be selling the few remaining tickets for the Conservation Lottery - last chance to buy a ticket to win a new 15Hp Merc Pro Kicker, Trojan Tackle Rod Holders or a new Sony Flat screen TV!

I will also be recruiting volunteers to spend a few hours at SAIL, Trainyards store. From April 25th through the 29th, we have been invited to setup our (new!) display material in the Fishing Department, and spread the word about Catch and Release, proper muskie handling, Know the Difference, etc. There is a signup thread on the Forum so please visit and let me know if you are able to do a shift.

Awards Night We'll be getting together at the Orleans Legion (7PM as usual) for a report from the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors and AWARDS NIGHT! We'll be handing out the pins and certificates for those who enjoyed some success on the water last year, including the trophy for the largest catch and release of 2017. We'll discuss our plans for the rest of 2018, including the Chapter Outing on June 16th and the budget, and I'll talk about our angling results based upon a review of the Log Program data over the last 5 years on the Ottawa, Rideau and St Lawrence Rivers. Did the high water levels in 2017 have an impact on our angling results? Join us and find out! Hope to see you there!

ELECTRONICS NIGHT TUESDAY, 7:00PM at the Orleans Legion
We will have two guest speakers: Rob (RJ) Jackson and Charles Sim will be on hand to talk about Humminbird electronics. They've spoken to us before but there is little in the muskie world - or the fishing world in general - that is changing as fast as the sonar's, GPS, sidescan and downscan. Lots of good tips and techniques to get you ready for soft water season.
We'll do a little bit of Chapter business ahead of the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors for Muskies Canada AND we'll have a sneak preview of our new Chapter display materials.
Hope to see a big crowd and welcome some new faces!

Please join us next Tuesday, January 16th, 7:00PM at the Orleans Legion for our first Chapter meeting of 2018.

We're going to start off with an event that was very well received last year - an "All Muskie Trivia" night! There will be questions on all aspects of all things Muskie: Tackle, Electronics, History, the Forum, etc. All in good fun ... but there will be prizes!

So far, the weather forecast looks good so we hope to see a great turnout - watch the Forum and our Facebook page if the weatherperson lies ... again!

DECEMBER MEETING - TUESDAY, 19 DEC AT 7:00PM Please join us at the Legion in Orleans for the final Chapter meeting of 2017. Free pizza and wings, a tackle swap, and a draw for an Okuma Coldwater reel (line counter). To enter, please bring a good quality, new-in-the-package lure that will help us restock the prize table supply for our monthly meetings next year. A big Thank You goes out to Bob Syrenne who has kicked off the draw with a donation of five baits and that will earn him five chances to win the reel!

We'll keep the business to a minimum and the fun to a maximum and get an early start on the season of "eating too much." We'll be talking about new Chapter display materials that ought to make our public outreach efforts a LOT easier to setup and take down not to mention very professional. Jarrett will wrap up this year's log draw, and we'll talk a little bit about what's on tap for 2018 - the 40th anniversary of Muskies Canada Inc!

Hope to see a BIG crowd out to wrap up the 2017 season. If you can make it, please let us know so we can make sure there will be lots of food for everyone. If you can't make it, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a "slimy" 2018.

Pizza and Lure Swap Traditionally we use this event to build up our supply of lures for prizes tables in the coming year. How we do this is to ask each of you to bring in a NEW lure in exchange for a ticket for a big prize. This year Hedrik has graciously donated a St Croix Legend Tournament 8 foot medium heavy rod. Thank you Hedrik. To qualify you must bring in a new lure of at least a $20 dollar value. Please no Storm or other bargain basement lures. You have to be there to win.

There will be plenty of pizza.

The lure swap is a great opportunity to expand your lure collection at a reasonable price. With lures at these prices you can expand the colour range of you favourite lure types or try out different lure types. No doubt there will also be rods, reels and tackle boxes available as well.

Get there early for the best selection.

    Let's Get Social Hi folks,

The October meeting will be more of a social evening. 7:30pm Orleans Legion upstairs.

This is your chance to interact with the folks you only see once a month and usually don't get to talk to much.

Chapter Exec Nominations - I haven't received any nominations or volunteers yet. As it stands we need a Secretary (Keeps minutes at the meetings.) and an Events Director (Coordinates the events we attend like the Sportsman's Shows and outreach sessions at Sail or LeBaron and keeps the booth up to date). If someone has a few hours a month to spare and wants to join the chapter executive please let me know. If anyone would like to run for a position that is currently occupied we will hold an election for those positions.

Show and Tell - Bring a few pictures on a USB stick or CD and we'll put them up on the big screen. Share a story about an experience you had this season. I know several folks have been on trips of a lifetime. I know the members would love to hear about them.

Ask A Veteran (Muskie Angler) - We have several members who have been doing this for over 20 years or more. Most are willing to share if you ask them a question. We'll try and get a few of the new folks asking some questions and maybe we can all learn something.

Fall Tactics - What to do when there's a chill in the air and the water cools down? We'll discuss some options to help you release a few more before the season ends.

Improving Your MCI Experience - How to make the most out of being a member of this club.

We'll also have an update on the Elvis Open being held this Sunday October 18th.

Looking forward to catching up with everyone.

We have Ross Nichols presenting Catch and Release 101. For those that don't know, Ross was lucky enough to release one of the largest Muskies in recent history. Ross has a great presentation that I think everyone will appreciate.

We will have a recap of the Muskie 101 we held on the Rideau last weekend. We will also discuss some of the topics we didn't cover on the water. Hopefully we can get some more questions from the new members that our experienced folks can help with.

We have 2 outings coming up on the Lower Ottawa June 20th and June 27th. You can register at the meeting. So far numbers are down from last year. Hopefully there will be a lot more sign-ups at the meeting. We need the final numbers in by the 19th to make sure everyone gets a meal.

Lure Swap and Pizza Night Join us May 19th at the Orleans Legion 7:30pm upstairs. It's our pre-season social evening. A chance to mingle and pick up some tips and new goodies. Pizza will be hot and hopefully the trading/selling will be as well.

We have a Handlebarz Bump Board that we are raffling off. Bring a new (in the package if possible) lure worth $15 or more to enter the draw for the bump board. Get one ticket for each lure donated.

We use these donated lures to run our monthly raffle tables and to bump up the prize tables at our outings. So bring something you would like to win back not just the cheapest one on the shelf...

Hopefully you have had a chance to get some new toys at the shows this year. Time to make room for them and get rid of that old stuff. Pretty sure everyone has some equipment (rods, reels, nets etc.) and a few lures they don't use. Trade or sell those dust collectors for something you will use...

If you missed out on new stuff at the shows no problem. We will have all our local bait makers in attendance to help you out.

Ginger has some new Ottawa Chapter Hats and T-Shirts as well.
