Muskie Fishing News 2018

Phase one of the ongoing Lake Simcoe Muskie Restoration Project is now complete with the successful wrap-up of the netting program!

OMNR Biologist Emily Funnell reports that the 2012 netting program wrapped up with the capture of three "families" of muskellunge. Three females provided eggs that were fertilized by males that were also netted in the Gloucester Pool. The eggs were transported to the Sir Sanford Fleming hatchery in Lindsay, ON.

SSF's Mark Newell reports that the first eggs collected with assitance from MCI President, Ian Young and MCI Public Education Director, Dax Jacklin, had an approximate 80% survival rate and that (approximately) 75% of those eggs are now hatched out. (See the story on the Lake Simcoe Restoration page on this website) Similar results are expected for the last two families that were netted on May 9th.

All in all a great start to the 2012 season.
